Analysis of Gundam Exia

Mobile Suit Variations are models of Mobile Suits making appearances in various environments.

This book is historical research, in which less well-known versions of Mobile Suits belonging to Celestial Being, the Union, the HRL and the AEU will be explained by the Mobile Suit development historian Robert Spacey. In this first chapter, the subject will be the high-mobility modification of Celestial Being’s GN-001 Gundam Exia – GN-001/hs-A01 Gundam Avalanche Exia. The white Mobile Suit that dramatically changed Robert’s life will now be shown to the world!

Robert Spacey

50 years old. Mobile Suit development historian. Originally a political historiographer, at 30 years of age he became physically involved in the world-changing series of events caused by Celestial Being. A chance encounter with a specially-equipped Exia left a great impression on him. After that, he shifted the topic of his historical research to MS development and immersed himself in it. When talking about MS research, there are many scientists who approach the subject from a strictly mechanical viewpoint. At that time there were no other people researching the development and application of Mobile Suits and for a long time that aspect was not given value. However, in the recent years there has been a trend towards reassessing the importance of such research and it seems to be getting more attention.

Hobby Japan presents – Gundam 00 supplementary series Gundam 00V.
The subject of the first chapter is a variation of the main character’s Gundam Exia equipped with high-mobility equipment – the GN-001/hs-A01 Gundam Avalanche Exia. It was designed by Kanetake Ebigawa, author of the original design for Exia.

GN-001/hs-A01 Gundam Avalanche Exia

Overall Height: 18.3m
Overall Weight: 62.1t (Weight of Avalanche equipment – 4.9t)
Unit type: high-mobility specially-equipped MS
Armament: GN Sword, GN Long Blade, GN Short Blade, GN Beam Saber x 2, GN Shield, GN Vulcan gun x 2
Affiliation: Celestial Being

GN Sword: The GN Sword is stored on the unit’s back. In battle, it is attached to the arm (sketch depicts the sword’s configuration as used in the anime)

Arms Storage Compartment: The unit’s armaments are stored in a compartment mounted on the upper back. Even though the compartment looks symmetrical, the left part houses special attachments for mounting two GN Blades.

Weapon Deployment System: The GN Blade and GN Sword are deployed via a special device that slides the weapon through the opening between the arm and main body.

The Avalanche was so named because it supposedly completely engulfs everything in its way, like a real avalanche. The hs in the model designation stands for "high-speed", while A01 stands for "Avalanche unit #1".

Additional Arm and Shoulder Equipment: The arms and shoulders house devices that accumulate GN Particles. Since the Avalanche’s condenser is larger than normal, it is able to accumulate a bigger GN Particle charge. Each of these devices is designed to withstand pressure of up to five tons. This is thought to be a measure for preserving the unit’s balance under increased pressure. During high-speed movement the shoulder and arm units are linked together.

Backstory:

Gundam. In the year 2037 they suddenly appeared in the world. Their technology was centuries ahead of other Mobile Suits. This wasn’t a revolutionary event just for Mobile Suit development history – it is important to understand and acknowledge the gravity of the changes it had on all aspects of history. The subject of this article is a specially-equipped model of one of the Gundam units – Exia.

The special equipment, codenamed Avalanche, was manufactured with the resources of Celestial Being’s technical specialist Ian Vasty, a former AEU military official. It seems that Vasty envisioned the Avalanche as a highly maneuverable aerial support unit. It should be mentioned, that widespread use of aerial Mobile Suits is quite typical of the AEU military. However, this development was very significant. While Gundam units housed GN Drives, which allowed them very high maneuverability in the air, they were outmatched by custom high-speed units both in the atmosphere and in space (of course, comparing these custom units with standard Mobile Suits would in itself be a fallacy).

The Avalanche Exia was equipped with several GN Condensers.Their primary function is to quickly release the concentrated GN Particles to allow quicker than action. Every time before a sortie, these condensers were charged, which required 1 hour. Thus, it was impossible to use them during unplanned operations. In addition, the accumulated charge was completely expended after 10 minutes of usage, which rendered the operational time extremely short (in any case, it’s doubtful that the pilot could endure any greater acceleration stress). The seven swords that Exia was best known for were stored on the upper part of the body during high-speed maneuvers.

As a special piece of equipment for Celestial Being’s Mobile Suits, the Avalanche was witnessed by people from the early days of CB’s operations.

It’s important to understand how the Avalanche was a step towards the technologies that appeared later. I will allow myself a small digression here to say that this unit changed my life. As a young political historiographer, I had the opportunity to accompany a UN inspection of the Union army. At that time the Union military was faced with the problem of increasing its armed presence in South America and I went there to collect data out of purely scientific interest. It was then that it appeared. I was engaged in a conversation with the inspection team’s pilot Ms. Deborah Gariena, when an alarm was sounded at the base. Right after that, Avalanche Exia appeared in the sky. The Union army immediately launched a squadron of Flags. However, the Flags, superior to Exia in aerial maneuverability, were torn apart by the Avalanche. The battle was over very quickly, but the image of Exia with its shining trail of GN Particles was forever burned into my memory. "I want to see it up close" – thinking that I decided to become a Mobile Suit development historian.
